Tsinghua University, formerly known as Tsinghua Xuetang, was founded in 1911 and renamed as Tsinghua School in 1912. In 1928, it was renamed as National Tsinghua University. In 1937, during the outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japan, the university temporarily moved to Changsha and merged with Peking University and Nankai University to form the National Changsha Temporary University. In 1938, it moved to Kunming and was renamed as National Southwest Associated University.
In 1946, the university returned to its original campus, Tsinghua Yuan, and was reorganized with five colleges: Arts, Law, Sciences, Engineering, and Agriculture, comprising 26 departments.
After the nationwide reorganization of higher education institutions in 1952, Tsinghua University became a comprehensive polytechnic university, focusing on the training of engineering and technical talents, earning the reputation of being the "cradle of the Red Engineers." With the advent of the reform and opening-up era, Tsinghua University gradually established its long-term goal of becoming a world-class university and entered a period of vigorous development.
The university reinstated or established new disciplines in science, humanities, medicine, economics, and management. It also founded a graduate school and a continuing education school. In 1999, the Central Academy of Arts and Design merged with Tsinghua University, becoming the Academy of Arts & Design. In 2012, the Graduate School of the People's Bank of China merged with Tsinghua University, forming the Tsinghua University PBC School of Finance.
With strong support from the government and society, and initiatives like the "211 Project" and the "985 Project," Tsinghua University has made significant progress in talent cultivation, scientific research, social service, cultural innovation, and international cooperation and exchange. Currently, the university has 21 colleges and 59 departments, encompassing 12 academic disciplines, including science, engineering, humanities, arts, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, education, medicine, and interdisciplinary studies. It has evolved into a comprehensive, research-oriented, and open university.
Looking to the future, Tsinghua University will uphold the motto of "Self-Discipline and Social Commitment" and the school spirit of "Actions Speak Louder than Words." It will adhere to the educational style of integrating Chinese and Western cultures, connecting the past and the present, and blending the sciences and the humanities. Tsinghua will continue to cultivate students who are both patriotic and professional, promoting excellence while embracing constant innovation. Guided by Xi Jinping's thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era, the university will always prioritize moral education and talent cultivation, serve the nation as its highest pursuit, build a solid foundation in disciplines, be propelled by deepened reforms, and ensure strong Party leadership. It will sustain its commitment to enhancing "Double First-Class" initiatives, striving for high-quality development with enriched connotations, and advancing toward the ranks of the world's leading universities, contributing even more to the nation's development, people's well-being, and the progress of human civilization.
