Tongji University, referred to as "Tongji", is located in Shanghai. The predecessor of the school was the German Medical School founded by Erich Baolong in Shanghai in 1907; it was renamed Tongji German Medical School in 1908; it was jointly called Tongji German Medical School with Tongji German School in 1912; it was officially named in 1923 Tongji University; became National Tongji University in 1927, one of the first seven national universities in China.

As of November 2022, the school has four main campuses in Siping Road, Jiading, Huxi and Hubei, covering an area of about 2.56 square kilometers, with a total construction area of more than 1.87 million square meters; there are 29 professional colleges and 82 campuses. There are 2,815 full-time teachers.
