Hohai University, referred to as (HHU), is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, which is characterized by water conservancy, takes advantage of engineering, and coordinates the development of economics, management, arts, science, law, art, education, agriculture and other disciplines. The Ministry of Water Resources, the State Oceanic Administration and the People's Government of Jiangsu Province jointly build universities. It is a national "double first-class" construction university, a national "211 Project" key construction, a "985 Project Advantageous Discipline Innovation Platform" construction, and a university with a graduate school. The first batch of units in the country with three-level degree-granting rights of doctorate, master and bachelor were selected into the national "111 Plan", "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program", National University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program, National Construction of High-level University Public Postgraduate Project, National Level new engineering research and practice projects, institutions receiving Chinese government scholarships for international students in China, national cultural quality education bases for college students, and national colleges and universities practical education innovation and entrepreneurship bases.
The predecessor of Hohai University can be traced back to the "Hohai Engineering Specialized School" founded by Zhang Jian in Nanjing in 1915. It was the first institution of higher learning in China to train talents in water conservancy. In 1924, it merged with the engineering department of National Southeast University to form Hohai University of Technology. In 1927, it was merged into National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University, and later changed its name to National Central University and Nanjing University. In 1952, the Water Conservancy Department of Nanjing University, the Water Conservancy Department of Jiaotong University, the Water Conservancy Group of the Civil Engineering Department of Tongji University, the Water Conservancy Group of the Civil Engineering Department of Zhejiang University, and East China Water Conservancy College merged to form "East China Water Conservancy College". In 1960, it was recognized as a national key university by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. In 1985, the traditional school name "Hohai University" was restored.
According to the official website of the school in April 2023, the school has 3 campuses in Xikang Road, Jiangning, and Changzhou, covering an area of 2,464 acres, with 20 departments, 71 undergraduate majors, 3,535 faculty members, and 16 postdoctoral fellows. Station, 42 degree authorization points; there are 55,912 students enrolled in various academic education.
