Huazhong University of Science and Technology, located in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, is a comprehensive research-oriented national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. The school was established in 2000 by the merger of the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University, and Wuhan Urban Construction College. The former Huazhong University of Science and Technology was formerly Huazhong Institute of Technology, which was organized by the state in 1952 and opened in October 1953. Tongji Medical University was formerly known as the German Medical School founded by Erich Baolong in Germany in 1907. Wuhan Urban Construction College was formerly known as Zhongnan Architectural Engineering School established in December 1952.
As of September 2022, the school campus covers an area of more than 7,000 acres, with a green coverage rate of 72%; it has 51 departments and 112 undergraduate majors; it has 39 post-doctoral research stations, and 46 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees. There are 48 first-level disciplines authorized for master’s degree; there are 7 national key disciplines of first-level disciplines, 15 national key disciplines of second-level disciplines, and 7 national key (cultivation) disciplines; there are more than 3,700 full-time teachers.
